A simple, family-friendly lunch followed by music from core members of the Creative Music Workshop, founded by the late Jerry Granelli. The group will be hosting a series of improvising workshops in Wolfville this fall and winter. This is an excellent chance to hear what they do and learn more about the mindfulness practice, deep listening, and joy that comes with spontaneous music-making.
Children 17 and under are free for lunch and show, and childcare is provided on site.

The Creative Music Workshop Faculty each possess a wealth of individual teaching and performing experience, and have also spent years both studying and teaching a unique and intensive approach to improvisation to a variety of participants ranging in age, ability, skill level and background.
Susanne Chui is a mother of two, an award-winning dance artist and Co-Artistic Director of Mocean Dance. As a performer for 22 years, Susanne has worked with over 25 choreographers from across the country, and her dancing in Mocean’s Canvas 5 x 5, choreographed by Tedd Robinson, earned her the 2016 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia’s Masterworks Award. A passionate improvisor, Susanne collaborates across disciplines and is a faculty member of the Creative Music Workshop. Her choreographic work has been presented by Kinetic Studio, the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, and Mocean Dance and her most recent project is Becoming Old Growth, a collective with Erin Donovan and Basma Kavanagh.
Ross Burns is a professional musician, mover and teacher based in Nova Scotia. Studying the guitar since a young age and training the Afro-Brazilian dance/martial art form capoeira seriously since 2003 Ross has become a familiar face on Canadian stages as a guitarist, percussionist, improvisor, acrobat and front man. Doug Cameron is a Halifax-based jazz and improv drum set player, instructor, and composer. After attending St. Francis Xavier, Doug has been based in Halifax, working in the jazz and new music scene with groups such as the Upstream Orchestra, SuddenlyLISTEN, and as a faculty member of the Creative Music Workshop. Doug has performed in several Mocean Dance projects, including Burnwater: Alchemy and Rewriting Distance.
Andrew MacKelvie is an improviser, educator, and musician who has been involved with the Creative Music Workshop since 2008. In 2022 he debuted two works dedicated to the CMW; Listening Legacy, a piece for programmed recorded voice and improvisers; and Treize Treize, a concerto for saxophone and drum-kit that was premiered by Symphony Nova Scotia in January 2023. He leads the improvised chamber group, New Hermitage. He is from Central Caribou, Pictou County.
Nicholas Maclean is a Dartmouth, NS-based musician, educator and improviser. He has been an active member of the CMW community since 2011 and has been teaching and performing as a faculty member since 2019. In-demand as a multi-instrumentalist in a number of genres, Nicholas has recorded and performed locally, across Canada and internationally with award-winning and -nominated artists such as Jerry Granelli, Gabrielle Papillon, Norma MacDonald, Kaia Kater and Kim Barlow, and many more.
