Quilting - Improvised Music

Ross Creek Annex, 2182 Sheffield Rd, Canning

Brian Borcherdt, electronics; Kim Barlow, guitar & banjo; Mairi Chaimbeul, harp; Sarhara Nasr, sarangi

Quilting is a Nova Scotia based improv quartet that creates an incredible live listening experience with their unique and multifaceted blend of musical styles. The four musicians of this ECMA-nominated group play a compelling mix of instruments including Mairi Chaimbeul’s Celtic harp, Kim Barlow’s banjo and hollow-body guitar, Sahara Jane’s North Indian sarangi, as well as a wild collection of electronics compiled and tastefully played by Brian Borcherdt.
As heard on their debut LP, the music unfolds in a patient evolution – rising from a place of stillness into moments of intensity, before cresting and subsiding again into quietude. At a Quilting show, you are transported into the musical psyches of the players as they explore sound, emotion and memory. Their music feels both familiar and unknowable, as musicians and audience enter a sound space where anything can happen - always shimmering from dark to light, and always eager to find the next moment of beauty together.
